When I was a little girl, I was convinced that in order to be a real woman, you had to wear lipstick. Whenever I’d go shopping with my mom, she’d always take at least 10 minutes to peruse the lipstick section. She’d sample the different colors by making little lipstick marks on her hands. I never liked the colors she chose—mauve, classy red, light pink—and made lipstick marks on my own small hands, with my own colors—hot pink, plum, orange.
