In my abstract painting I try to depict the
emotional reality of situations. This type of work has been loosely labeled
Metaphorical Abstraction. It is part of a lineage that has its roots in
Abstract Expressionism, and while endorsing that movements' formal rigor,
it is grounded in some thematic reality. I love the dreamlike creation
of form and space simply through the uncharted pushing of paint across
a surface. With the evolutionary ebb and flow of trial and error, an image
emerges that triggers recognition. When a piece is successful this recognition
occurs on the emotional, intellectual, as well as purely visual level.
"In the Life of Days" for example, is a series that attempts to give visual
meaning to both the joy and monotony of raising young children. Time is
metaphorically depicted through the repetition of horizontal bands, carved
by the simple gesture of the arm's lateral sweep, made luminous by the
layering of veiled pigments.
